How the Work Hours Calculator works
The calculator first finds the gross Wall-clock Duration from the shift start to the shift end. Ends next day adds one explicit 24-hour offset. It then subtracts the unpaid break once to produce net work time.
Examples you can reproduce
- 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break = 8 hours of net work.
- 10:30 PM to next-day 6:30 AM with a 45-minute break = 7 hours 15 minutes.
- A zero-minute break leaves net work time equal to gross duration.
Limits and assumptions
This calculator handles one shift only. It does not calculate weekly time cards, multiple shifts, pay, hourly rates, overtime, tax, holidays, or timezone-aware elapsed time.
Frequently asked questions
How are breaks deducted?
Enter the total unpaid break in whole minutes. It must not exceed the gross shift duration.
How do overnight shifts work?
Turn on Ends next day. The calculator adds exactly 1,440 minutes before subtracting the start and the break.
Is my shift sent to a server?
No. Calculation stays in your browser. Only an explicit Share action places normalized inputs in the URL fragment.
